Morals from the Bible
By Janean Nusz
In today's harsh world it is often hard to allow children to find their
way on their own, but in every older child's life there comes a time to
let them learn on their own. Proverbs 22:6 states: “Train up a child in
the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it",
but for some parents, the decision to let the child test his 'training'
is often a difficult one.
At twelve years of age, Jesus and went to the temple in Jerusalem without
his parents. Today, our children begin the journey to adulthood in their
adolescence. They begin to search for independence, freedom from parental
supervision and decision, autonomy and individualism. This search can be
difficult to watch as a parent. Many decisions that your child will make
might not be the ones you consider to be ‘right’. Many of their choices
may result in consequences that teach a hard lesson. These decisions and
choices may come easier to those who have a sturdy spiritual foundation
to rely on, and in providing this foundation, parents can gain a sense
of security and peace.
Teach Everyday
“These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress
them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when
you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deuteronomy
6:6-7
Impress upon your children the virtues of a Godly life, and the bounty
of joy that God grants those who follow his ways. Teach these precepts
each day so that when the turbulent years hit, your child will have something
worthwhile to fall back on when making those difficult decisions. Teach
your children when they are young, develop a rapport with them, make it
easy for them to accept the teachings of the Bible by impressing the teachings
upon them in all ways, everyday. And when they are in need of guidance
in their older years, these well-taught teachings will be at their disposal.
Good Work Ethics
“Whatsoever your hand findeth to do, do it with your might.” Ecclesiastes
9:10
This verse will help to teach your children the value of a good work ethic.
When children do things to the best of their ability, when they try their
hardest at the most mundane of jobs, when they produce results in the face
of adversity, they are demonstrating a good work ethic. Many parents today
are deeply concerned about this very thing, and seem to think that the
work ethics found in children today are much worse than those found in
prior generations. In teaching your child the value of work, you’ll be
setting the stage for their adult lives. Colossians 3:23 is another verse
that will help you teach valuable work ethics.
Value of Family
“Remember the Lord who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers,
your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.” Nehemiah 4:14
Teach your children the value of family. In today’s world, where vice and
corruption hold court, family may be one of the few safe harbors they will
have.
Respect
"Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and
revere your God." Leviticus 19:32
Teach your children to respect their elders, and in doing so, to respect
you. This respect will enable them to talk to you about things that they
find difficult in their lives.
Avoiding Materialism
"Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist
in the abundance of his possessions." Luke 12:15
Never before has there been such a vast array of products for your children
to see-and desire to have. The youth of today is one of the most targeted
demographics in the marketing world! Teach your children to avoid materialistic
notions and greed.
Value of Truth
“Serve Him in sincerity and in truth.” Joshua 24:14
The ability to tell the truth is a characteristic that seems to be lacking
in today’s world. People lie constantly. They tell ‘little white lies’
and great big whoppers. They lie their way out of trouble. They lie their
way into beneficial situations. They lie to their friends, their co-workers,
their parents, their children and their spouses. Children need to be taught
the benefits of honesty, and the harmful and unpleasant consequences of
a lie. They need to be taught that integrity is of great value, and a good
moral character will be an asset in their adulthood. There are many verses
in the Bible which teach your children the value of honesty and truth,
Joshua 23:14 is just one example. Ephesians 4:25 is also helpful in teaching
truth.
Love
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and
with all your mind.” Matthew 22:37
The value of true love, as in God’s unselfish and unending love for us,
cannot be set. In order for our children to have a fulfilling spiritual
life in their adulthood, they must first realize the power of God’s love
for us and our love for others. Charity, compassion, sympathy, consideration,
selflessness, kindness and thoughtfulness all have their roots in love.
Without being taught the value of Christian love, how can our children
share it? How can our children pass this love on to others if they do not
know its meaning? Teaching your children the value and practice of love
will allow them to share many meaningful and fulfilling relationships in
their adulthood.
By using the Bible as a guide, you’ll be able to teach your children more
than 30 morals and characteristics, so that when the time is right to let
your children walk their path on their own, you’ll be able to trust that
God’s word will be there to help them. You can give them no sounder foundation
than that!
